CCTV News: Rowing originally existed as a mode of transportation in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. Rowing became a competitive sport mainly from the 17th century to the early 18th century. In 1829, Oxford and Cambridge universities began to hold rowing competitions that attracted worldwide attention.
Project rules
In rowing, athletes push the boat forward by rowing fixed blades. Different from other events, rowers have to cross the finish line with their backs to the forward direction.
The rowing track is 2000 meters long, and the number of people on the boat can be single, double, four and eight. Rowing competition can be divided into double oars and single oars. Single paddle competition, that is, athletes hold one paddle in both hands, while double paddles hold one paddle in each hand. The eight-person race will be equipped with a helmsman who is responsible for controlling the ship and giving orders to the crew. One person in the team can steer the rowing boat through the pedal.
Olympic history
Except for the 1896 Athens Olympic Games, rowing was not absent from any Olympic Games. In fact, rowing was also an Olympic event at that time, but due to the weather, the organizing Committee had to cancel the competition. Women’s rowing made its Olympic debut at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.
The United States ranked first in the Olympic rowing medal list with 89 medals, including 33 gold medals. In the history of Olympic rowing, Sir steven redgrave (5 gold and 1 bronze) and Elizabeth Lipper (5 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze) are recognized as the greatest male and female rowers.
